April 2010 is the 42nd anniversary of the passage of the federal Fair Housing Act, the groundbreaking legislation that affirms the right of every citizen to obtain the housing of their choice without being limited by race, color, religion, national origin, sex, disability or familial status. The Florida Fair Housing Act, passed in 1992, also affirms these rights. The Commission works diligently to make sure these rights are afforded to every Floridian.

The Florida Commission on Human Relations, established in 1969, is the state agency charged with enforcing the Florida Civil Rights Act and Fair Housing Act. The purpose of these laws is to protect the people of Florida from discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, marital status or familial status. Through education, outreach and partnerships, the Commission works to prevent discrimination and foster mutual understanding in communities statewide.
