Senseless Acts of Hate Must Not Continue

A letter to the editor from Commissioner Fajardo regarding the April 2008 hate crimes in South Florida.

On behalf of the Florida Commission on Human Relations, I would like to extend our support to South Floridians after the recent acts of hate inflicted upon Jewish communities during the week of Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day. Hate crimes not only hurt the victims for whom they directly target, but they fan the flames of intolerance and instill fear and divisiveness for all people who live and work in the respective community. We must not allow these instances to further divide the people of Florida as perpetrators would hope; rather, we all must come together and be united. As a free nation, people of all beliefs should band together to protect and defend the religious freedoms each and every one of us has chosen and been afforded by the Constitution on which our nation is founded. We hope you will join us in our quest of promoting acceptance and respect for everyone in the state of Florida.
